Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

We camped in Mammoth Hot Springs and took off early in the morning to get to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Canyon Village. Just as the sun was coming up we drove past some buffalo on an early morning road run (they are really scary when they are running down the road!) At the intersection of the road to Canyon Village and the Lamar Valley we hit construction that had the road to Canyon Village completely shut down until 7am (It was 6:30) so we took a drive into the Lamar Valley and spotted a fox outside of her den.
You can just make out the foxes pointy ears sticking up in the middle of this photo.

We ate breakfast in Canyon Village and hiked to the lookouts for the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and the falls. We hit one of the lookouts at the right moment and got a beautiful rainbow coming off of the falls:

An elk relaxing by the roadside.

Looking down at Lower Falls (twice the height of Niagara Falls)

Then we headed back to the North Entrance and the Lamar Valley on a curvy road following the cliffs over a huge valley. We watched a black wolf stalk some elk - Still no Grizzly sightings! On our way back through the construction we waited in a traffic jam as three buffalo stopped all traffic to come through what the construction had made a one lane road.
